Mitsubishi Set to Reenter the EV Market with Electric SUV in 2026

Mitsubishi is gearing up for a major return to the EV market with plans to launch a new electric SUV in the United States by 2026. This marks Mitsubishi’s first electric vehicle since the compact i-MiEV, which left the market in 2017.

The upcoming EV is expected to be a small crossover featuring a coupe-like roofline, potentially sharing its platform with the Nissan Leaf replacement. The new Nissan Leaf, set to arrive this year, is trading its traditional hatchback design for a more SUV-inspired body style and will reportedly utilize the CMF-EV platform that underpins the Nissan Ariya. The design cues for both vehicles were hinted at in the 2021 Nissan Chill-Out concept.

Mitsubishi’s EV Strategy

According to Automotive News, Mitsubishi dealers were briefed on the new EV during a recent meeting. While specific details about the vehicle remain scarce, sources suggest the electric SUV will be manufactured in Japan. Mitsubishi hopes this new model will help establish its presence in the competitive EV market.

The announcement comes as Mitsubishi discontinues its budget-friendly Mirage, which saw a sales surge in 2024, selling 29,766 units. Although the new EV is unlikely to fill the void left by the Mirage’s sub-$18,000 starting price, Mitsubishi is exploring other options to appeal to value-conscious buyers, including a lower-priced version of the Outlander Sport.

Outlander Updates on the Horizon

In addition to EV developments, Mitsubishi is planning to roll out a refreshed Outlander for the 2025 model year, set to debut on February 24. The updated model will feature subtle exterior tweaks, revamped cabin materials, new interior color options, and a Yamaha sound system.

Mitsubishi also revealed plans to introduce a lifted variant of the Outlander within the next two years, further expanding its SUV offerings. These moves aim to bolster the Outlander lineup, which remains Mitsubishi’s bestseller in the U.S.

A Renewed Push into EVs

The reintroduction of an electric model aligns with Mitsubishi’s goal of staying competitive in a rapidly evolving automotive market. While the i-MiEV struggled to make a significant impact with its limited range and compact size, Mitsubishi is now poised to deliver a more appealing and capable EV.
