PPG and BYD Receive Supreme Gold Award for Groundbreaking Automotive Color: Argyle Purple

SHENZHEN, China, Jan. 8, 2024 – PPG (NYSE: PPG) is proud to announce its joint recognition with automaker BYD as winners of the Supreme Gold Award at the prestigious 2024 International CMF Design Awards. The accolade highlights Argyle Purple, a groundbreaking automotive color featuring an optical effect that creates the striking illusion of liquid metal. This revolutionary color is showcased on BYD’s Yangwang U9 electric super coupe, China’s fastest production car.

A Collaborative Achievement in Innovation

Argyle Purple stood out among over 3,000 competing designs, earning accolades for its innovation and commercial appeal. This marks the first time this optical effect has been applied to automotive coatings on a mass scale, a feat made possible by the integration of cutting-edge optical technology with PPG’s advanced AQUACRON® PWB premium waterborne basecoat coating.

The award was accepted by Cindy Li, PPG Senior Color Styling Manager, Asia, Automotive Coatings, and Luo Zhizhi, BYD Senior Manager, Automotive Color and Fabric Design. This collaboration represents a milestone for BYD and PPG, showcasing the synergy between styling, technology, and application development to achieve significant industry recognition.

“At PPG, we are committed to pushing the boundaries of vehicle design and manufacturing through continuous innovation and a deep understanding of market and consumer needs,” said Cindy Li. “Argyle Purple embodies that commitment, combining advanced color science and application technology while also aligning with PPG’s 2025 Color of the Year, Purple Basil.”
